The three Student Officers are elected each year by their fellow current Teesside University students to represent them and ensure their voice is heard by the most senior figures at the University and a range of external bodies like The National Union of Students (NUS). They are also lead members of the TUSU Board of Trustees, oversee the running of Teesside University Students' Union (TUSU) and lead on various campaigns and events for the benefit of students along with other duties and responsibilities related to their position. These are fun and challenging roles providing an opportunity to gain unique experience and skills and most current students* can run for them. You do not need specific past experience, but previous involvement in TUSU as a student rep, society member/ leader or member of student staff is an undoubted advantage. We also strongly advise students who are entirely new to the University to settle into student life and really build their understanding of student issues and the students' union before running for a role.

KEY THINGS TO NOTE ABOUT THE ROLES:

  • You do not apply for these roles in the way you would a traditional job. Instead, you must run in the TUSU Elections in February and campaign for votes from your fellow students. The candidate with the most votes is elected to the Student Officer role and would take office at the start of July.
  • You may only run for ONE of the three Student Officer positions.
  • The roles are full-time and run for at least 12 months from July 2025. You would earn just over £25,000 per year.
  • To enter this year's TUSU Elections race, you must self-nominate between 10 am on Mon, 17th Feb and 4 pm on Fri, 21st Feb. We will be sharing a detailed guide on how to complete the process on our social media and tees-su.org.uk/elections, and help will also be available all that week from the Students' Union Building.
  • Strong candidates will have a solid knowledge of the students' union and student issues. They will also be confident, diplomatic, humble and tolerant, a people person, a good communicator, well organised and hardworking. Read the full summary of each role below.

* There are various circumstances that may prevent a person from running in the TUSU Elections or eventually becoming a Trustee of the Teesside University Students' Union. These can be related to your right to live and work in the UK, your past financial history, a past criminal record or issues you are having with the University such as disciplinary action or unpaid fees. Please review the advice on tees-su.org.uk/elections and feel free to email: elections@tees-su.org.uk for a confidential discussion about your situation.
